RHIAN'S SOCCER MEDIA REPORTSCANADA FALLS HEAVILY 15th September 2010From CSA and German Press
With a 5-0 (1-0 ) victory against Canada ,
Germany's soccer women are off to a good start in their
preparations for the World Cup next summer which they are hosting.
"The loss humbled the team, but that's what happens when you play
one of the best teams in the world in Germany," said national
coach Carolina Morace.
In the Rudolf Harbig stadium in Dresden, the match was played before 20, 431 spectators. Dresden has proved itself to be a women's soccer city, boasting amazing attendances during the U-20 Women’s World Cup. At a German Women's training session on Sunday, over 800 fans were there to watch.
Canada ceded an early penalty goal at the two minute mark, when Birgit Prinz was fouled. However, the Canadians managed to hold the score to 1 - 0 until the second half.
Then, Bajramaj scored in the 54th minute and Alexandra Popp and Melanie Behringer scored in the 74th and 79th minutes. Finally, Celia Okoyino da Mbabi took another goal at 83 minutes.
This was Germany's increased ninth victory in nine games against Canada. The last match they played against each other was an international friendly on September 4, 2005 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Of the latest roster, only Lang, LeBlanc, Matheson, Tancredi, and Wilkinson were on the roster that day. The team put 3 goals past Nadine Angerer, but the game winning goal was scored by German stalwart Birgit Prinz.
Following the match against Germany, Canada will face off against China on September 30 at BMO Field in Toronto. Canada will host Germany sometime during the last quarter of 2011 when both teams prepare for the 2012 London Olympics.
Note: The Canadian Women’s National Team will travel to Ontario, Canada following their stay in Germany. On September 19, Kara Lang and Diana Matheson, along with the rest of the team, will host a clinic in their hometown of Oakville. Participants of all ages and skill levels are welcome to attend the event at Pine Glen Soccer Centre. The clinic will focus on “passing/first touch, dribbling and 1v1 moves, and small-sided games”. National Team players will also be on hand for photographs and autographs.
At the event, please make a donation to the Haitian national team that was devastated by a 7.0 magnitude earthquake earlier this year. For more information, visit www.oakvillesoccer.ca, and sign up for the event by e-mailing nationalclinic@oakvillesoccer.ca.
