SOUR LOSS TO LEAGUE LEADERS KOLBOTN   24th June 2009

Norwegian Press   Translation by Per Kristiansen

When things are not going well, they have a habit of really not going well. Against League leaders Kolbotn, and in front of a crowd of almost 200 in this evening game, Team Strommen turned in an excellent performance. Their spirit  was good, but they finished with a 3 - 2 loss.

The game began well for the home team, and they dominated the early part of the game. Once again though, they were unable to find the back of the net. And, they made the cardinal error of allowing a Kolbotn player to stand all by herself on a corner kick. It was enough for Kolbotn to take a 1 - 0 lead.

Monica Knudsen was working as head coach in this game as Janne Jansson had received a red card previously.  Fortunately, it was not too scary a position for her. "The team and I know each other very well. They know what I expect. The strategy for this game wasn’t changed ahead of the game because Janne was out."

Unfortunately, another red card had a serious effect on the match. A couple of minutes before half time Mari Knudsen made a bad pass which a Kolbotn player picked up, and then tried to go around Team Strommen's goalkeeper Ingrid Bruserud. The goalie was charged with a professional foul, received a red card, and the referee awarded a penalty. Bruserud was upset because there was "no contact made, and the Kolbotn player knew she would not reach the ball and deliberately fell down." Miriam Mumtaz of Kolbotn stepped up and put the ball into  the net.

In the second half Team Strømmen were stung by the exxpulsion, and really lifted their game. It took juest three minutes for Marit Sandvei to put a freekick into the net. Less than ten minutes later Nasra Abdullah evened the score to tie 2-2. Just after that both Diana Matheson and Una Nwajei were sent in alone on the goalie, but could not put the ball past her.

Monica Knudsen left the stadium very upset that Team Strommen did not receive even a point for this performance.  "The penalty should not have been awarded, and letting the player stand by herself on a corner was bad. However, we have to remember the positive things we did in this game. We played well and we played even better with ten players."

But, when things go wrong, they go really wrong.

There is some difficult soccer ahead for Team Strommen as well. On 27th June they play Kattem just beneath them in the table, then Staebek who are ahead of them. In the Norway Cup they have another game against Kolbotn, while in the European Championships, Team Strommen is drawn in  a pool with Osijec from Croatia whom they play first. Also in the pool is Everton from England, a strong Club which ended as runners-up in the English League last year.
