SOCCER REPORTS

CANADA ARE THE CHAMPIONS   11th November 2010

(From an Ottawa Fury article)

After defeating Mexico for the second time in six days, Canada was crowned CONCACAF Champions in the Women's World Cup Qualifier with a 1:0 victory at Cancun in Mexico.

The Canadian goal came from the penalty spot from captain Christine Sinclair. While Canada had already assured themselves of a berth in the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup to be held in Germany, after defeating Costa Rica in the semi-finals, they now enter as Champions of CONCACAF.

They posted a 5-0-0 record and did not surrender a single goal in the tournament, outscoring the opposition 17-0. The Fury were well represented by Youth Grad and W-League striker Christina Julien, W-League defender Marie-Eve Nault and former W-League stars Diana Matheson, Rhian Wilkinson, Robyn Gayle and Carmelina Moscato.

Canada will now begin preparations for the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany June 26 - July 17 where they look to improve on their 9th place finish in 2007.
