RHIAN'S SOCCER JOURNALS:

THE EVE OF CANADA'S WORLD CUP IN CHINA 11th September 2007

Tomorrow is game day for the Canada team as we kick off our Women's World Cup challenge against Norway.

Resting up and preparing for the first match always seems to make me tired. This is especially true today, because we have had a fatiguing day. It's not so much that much happened, but rather that there was plenty of waiting around with nothing to do.

Our training tonight started at 07:45am in the stadium, and so we had the rest of the day off to rest, hydrate and finish carbohydrate loading. Everything I had heard about the stadium where we will be playing in tomorrow is true. It is an amazing structure, one of the most beautiful I have ever been in, and the grass surface is impeccable.

The session was a short one, but also very high intensity and very focused. I can only speak for myself, but I think that the feeling goes for everyone, that the tone of the practice was high quality. It felt good to be out on the field running around, and tomorrow should be an exciting, not to say challenging, day.

There were three Women's World Cup games played today, and three ties ensued. I think this goes to show how well matched all of the teams are in this year's tournament. In past years there were dominant nations (in the same vein as the opening Germany vs Argentina game), and you that knew one of these dominant teams was for sure going to be bringing home the gold. This is no longer the case. There are no easy games, no for sure victories. The winner of this tournament is going to have to be on the ball for each and every time they step out onto the field, and fitness and endurance will become a factor.

Till tomorrow, Rhian
