SNOW ARRIVES AT LAST
Yesterday, January 15th January 2007, Montreal finally got some snow. I know that people on the west coast
will not understand this, but it started some time in the night and we were happy to see it. The snow didn't let
up till late in the evening - AMAZING!!!!!!!!

At about 10:00am in the morning, I decided to try and go for a run, but this was not a success. It was hard to
run in the snow drifts underfoot, but the main issue was getting driving ice pellets and snowflakes in my eyes.
Eventually, I decided I had to turn back for home. This was because I decided that running with my eyes shut tight
along a main road was not a good idea.
Even though the run was a short one, I still felt like a bad ass for even attempting it, and the looks of incredulity
from passing motorists only motivated me further. Obviously, going out in these conditions for a good, long run was out
of the question, so I decided instead to head for the hills.

This sounds a little more exciting than it actually is. In fact, I headed for the one real hill in Baie D'Urfe with
a toboggan, having persuaded my friend Sarah, her dog Timone, and my dog Dilys (don't ask), to accompany me. At 24 and
23 years of age, and the dogs even older in dog years, I felt that we might be a little past the downhill sledding age
limit, but I changed my mind quickly. The truth is that there is no limit to the enjoyment from sledding on a snow hill:
Everyone should be heading fro the toboggan runs at the first opportunity. I had a fantastic time and Sarah and I haven't
laughed so much since....well probably, the last time we went sledding...sometime in the late 1980's???

When we tired of just sitting on the toboggan, we decided to double decker it. When that became too easy, we went down
on the board standing up, a la sow board. Finally, when even that became too easy, we went down standing up together.
We stayed at Allen's hill until we finally completed a double standing descent; it wasn't that dark when we finished.
We were very pleased with ourselves. I was sad to see that we were the only two people out enjoying the hill. I would have
liked to see it packed with kids, but perhaps they were doing homework though as school has started? I hope everyone else
is enjoying the winter weather as much as I am. I am hoping to get a bit of cross country skiing in this week before we
head back to Vancouver on Sunday. Despite the unusual weather in BC, I can't se me doing much cross country skiing in
Vancouver.
