RHIAN SOCCER JOURNALS

OLYMPIC QUALIFIERS CAMP BEGINS    3rd January 2012

I enjoyed my Christmas break with family and friends, and I had a fantastic vacation, although I use the term "vacation" lightly as it there was plenty of hard work put in over the holiday.

Olympic Qualifiers are coming up fast and we had a ton of training work to do while we were home. There was no need to look very far for motivation. We had some tough training days scheduled for us, so we just rolled up our sleeves and got down to it. I know because I saw Facebook and Twitter reports of how my team mates were faring.

It is now January 3rd 2012, and we are back in camp. This will be the final camp in California to prepare for the upcoming 2012 CONCACAF Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Vancouver, BC.

For the next week and a bit we are training again in Fullerton. I have to admit that I am enjoying being out of the cold of Montreal, but I doubt the feeling will last long, as I usually really love winter.

This is going to be a hard and intense week of camp, lasting for 11 days. It will be a time for last minute tweaks and adjustments from the coaching staff and these have already started. We had only one training session today, as we all landed and assembled in the afternoon. I think all of us were slightly tired and jet-lagged, and so it wasn't too bad of a session. We are obviously a little rusty from time away, but form and fitness have started to come back slowly. "The players have arrived and they have headed straight into training with the first session now under their belt," said Herdman. "The players came ready to go and they are really focused."

Tomorrow is going to be a hard day. As you know, these camps usually start with the dreaded Yo-Yo test, but I am already looking forward to writing tomorrow's website journal because by then, I will be able to write about it having been done.
I am already tired. My day started very early this morning. So, Happy New Year to everyone and good health and happiness to everyone for 2012.

There is sad news elsewhere in the women's soccer world, with the demise of Santos FC because fo financial reasons. This women's club was created in 1997 and has been home to some of the World's most well known and talented women's football players including Marta, Christiane and Érika.
