RHIAN SOCCER JOURNALS

TIED WITH BRAZIL, CANADA PLAYS COLUMBIA  22nd October 2011

We played Brazil tonight in our last group stage match of the Pan American Games, and we finished in a tie. We and Brazil have the exact same record at the Games so far, after the first three games of the tournament. The "winner" of the group came down to a coin toss and we lost. So, Brazil will therefore play Mexico in the semi finals, while we play the top team of the group A: Columbia.

If this tournament has taught us anything, it is that there are rarely any easy games anymore. Once upon a time Canada seemed to have a relatively easy time dealing with teams like Costa Rica, Argentina and Columbia. This is definitely no longer the case. These teams are really starting to invest in their women’s national soccer programs and the fruits of these investments are already being seen.

I can’t remember if I have ever played Columbia before but I am not going to underestimate them. I am looking forward to the semi finals match against them in two days time and I believe that facing them, we can expect a good game against strong opposition.

As for tonight's game against Brazil, the match was a real battle, as it always is. We absolutely dominated the first half and should really have put the game to bed. We had some decent opportunities, but we were not as dangerous as we should have been. We have to put away chances for goals.

As a defender, I was pleased with the team’s defensive display and structure and I think we did well. This was one of our strongest defensive performances for a long time.

In the second half we started to let Brazil back into the game. I felt that we still produced more good chances and had good movement, but for the second period they were probably the more dangerous team, even tough I felt we were fitter. Scoring goals against them is clearly something we are going to have to fix. We have to close games and I am sure we will be working on this before our semi finals begin on Tesday.

I would like to make a special mention of Desiree Scott’s game tonight. She was a monster out there and left everything she had out on the field. The coach threw her out there in a position that she had never played before, and she was, in my opinion, the best Canadian player on the field.

Well, we are in the semi finals and we know whom we will play. The time is now past midnight and I must definitely start winding down and getting some sleep. Thank you to all those athletes and staff from Team Canada who made the trip out to the stadium to cheer us on. Your support was so amazing for us out there on the field. Thank you also, to the guy who sang the national anthem in French down in the corner of the field, I enjoyed it very much and it stirred my soul.
