RHIAN SOCCER JOURNALS

WNT ON A BREAK                       26th  April 2011

Guest Journal by Robyn Gayle.

After wrapping up our game against the "soprano" boys in Italy, the players of the Canada Women's team were more than ready to begin a break. Rhian, D and myself wasted no time, and within a couple of hours of camp wrapping up, we were headed off to the airport.

First port of call was London. We made our way to England for what I consider one of the best days of my life!

We spent the morning hauling our bags around this enormous city trying to get everything organized before our scheduled tour of the Emirates Stadium at 12:30pm. Rhian had a mini panic attack when she suddenly realized the time was 12:22 and we had just arrived at her cousin’s home to drop off our bags. Fortunately, her cousin’s place is literally steps away from the Emirates, so we made it just in time for the tour.

The pitch there is absolutely flawless and I can't even begin to imagine how amazing the atmosphere must be in the stadium on game day. The highlight of the tour for me was probably seeing the locker room. The room itself wasn’t anything truly extraordinary, but it was neat to take a seat in Cesc’s locker (Cesc Fabregas is one of my favorite players).

After picking up some souvenirs, we then grabbed some lunch and headed off to Whitehart lane to watch the Tottenham vs Arsenal Premiership match. One of my dreams has always been to watch an Arsenal game at the Emirates. Even though White Hart Lane is not quite the same, our experience wasn’t too shabby.

We managed to get amazing seats, but they were in the Tottenham section. Unfortunately for me, this meant that I had to be literally restrained from cheering otherwise I sincerely believe I would’ve been injured by the die-hard Tottenham supporters.

I wasn’t allowed to wear my Arsenal jersey or cheer for my team, but when Tottenham began their chant of “Stand up if you hate Arsenal,” that’s where I drew the line. I remained in my seat. I was not impressed with D and Rhi who promptly stood up: Such followers! (Rhian would like to add that the reason she stood up was because she sincerely thought that if she didn't she might be killed!)

The game was very entertaining and ended in a 3-3 tie. After the match, some announcers called it the game of the 2011 season. As an Arsenal fan it was disappointing to come out with only one point, but we’ve since ruined our chances at winning the title anyway.

Overall it was an incredible experience. Watching the game live gave me so much more respect for the players. You can really see their skills and outstanding technical abilities. I was also able to confirm that Cesc and I are soul mates. It's just a minor detail, but he doesn’t know it yet.
