RHIAN'S SOCCER JOURNALS:

PREPARING FOR THE ENGLISH     25th February 2010

After our opening game, there were some tired and sore bodies this morning at breakfast. It was a pretty relaxed morning though as we only had training at 10:00 am.

Once at the practice field, the starters did some running, stretching and played a couple of rounds of soccer tennis. Meanwhile, the rest of the team did fast footwork training with the coaches. Everyone was in a good mood, and at the end of the day we realize that we did WIN the game against Switzerland. It may not have been in the manner we wanted, but it was a victory. And, to help our collective mood, the weather was also really warm and sunny; not at all hot, just perfect soccer weather.

Once back at the hotel Carolina asked us to go as a team into the ocean "ice bath" for 10-20 minutes. We usually do this anyway in small pockets of people, but I think this time she wanted a team bonding group dip. I have not been around Karina lately, or at least I have not been around her in cold water recently, and it turns out I have been missing out.

The shrieks coming from that woman could have been heard back in Canada, and poor Cindy had to deal with first KK yanking on her arm and then KK climbing onto her back - hilarious. Her case, and ours, was not helped by the fact that a storm has been moving in and the waves are bigger than I have ever seen them here.

We had only been in the water for 5 minutes when lightning streaked across the sky. Obviously this was all the divine sign we needed to vacate the water. Some exited the water much faster than others. The image of KK trying so, so very hard to get out of the water as quickly as possible and yet barely moving, will remain with me for quite some time. I almost forgot to get out myself, I was laughing so hard.

The storm that came through was a big one, with rain lashing down and the wind roaring. We are all hoping that the weather will clear up for the morning, but the weather forecast does not look good.
