RHIAN'S SOCCER JOURNALS:
STROMMEN NEEDS TO GET BACK ON TRACK AS WHEELS FALL OFF
5th October 2009
I have taken my time in writing a journal on last Tuesday’s game against Stabaek, 29th September, as losing 5-0
is never good for the ego. It would be easy enough to say that they were the better team and just leave things there.
Obviously, they were the better team as the score line shows, but I thought the match was rather different than this
score seems to suggest. This is one of those games we will try to forget quickly.
At Team Strommen, we have been having some goalkeeper issues of late and for this game we had the brave and heroic
Lena in nets. She bit the bullet and came out of retirement to assume the job. When she was playing for Team Strommen, she
was an amazing right back, and she played at this position with me in 2005. She can’t be much over 5’ 3" tall, if that, so standing
in for our injured goalies was always going to be a challenge.
Unfortunately for her, things did mot bounce our way early on and Stabaek got off a header from a corner kick that that bounced
off one of our defenders, then hit the post, and then bounced into the net. Things did not get much better on the defensive side of
things, but on offence we did produce some good chances. Una and I both had some great chances that we should have put away.
At any other time, we might have had three goals to our credit by the half.
In the second half, we started strongly and again we created some good chances, but once again, it was Stabæk that scored. In
the 54th minute Stabaek was awarded a penalty that they scored on, and after this the whole teram seemed deflated, even giving away
another penalty before the game was over.
This match had just about everything: Two penalties; a near-sending off; five goals against us and a sending off. Despite all this,
we did not play badly. This is why losing 5-0 really sucks. All I can say is just a big thank you to Lena for her courage in
stepping in for us as goalie. Let's hope that Ingrid, our usual starter, recovers soon. And, this is not meant to slight Lena
in the least.
If I thought losing to Stabaek by 5 goals to 0 sucked, then losing to Arne Bjornar really, REALLY sucked. However, unlike
the Stabaek game, Team Strommen did mot play well in this match. Perhaps it was
just wearing our new yellow jerseys while the home side
wore red? Whatever, the conditions were terrible and I should have known as captain that when Arne Bjornar heaved a sigh of relief and
chose one end of the pitch in particular, this end would become a mud bath by game's end.
However, it is too easy for us to make the terrible conditions an excuse for our loss. We did control the first 10 minutes of the game
and we had some long range shots (well-wide of the mark). Unfortunately, Arna got two pretty fast goals on us. The first was a long through ball in the middle,
the second a scramble, but we went into the break 0 - 2 down. And, with poor Lena still courageously taking on the goalkeeper duties, this
game in which we still seemed to dominate possession, seemed to turn on a swivel.
When Lena herself went down injured, half way through the first half, we really
do seem to be having a run of bad luck. In now came
the equally heroic and courageous Eli to try to fill the void in our net minder position.
Poor Eli. We did not play well and allowed Arna to play around us. The conditions were so wet and saturated, that any shot on target
was dangerous. Then Arne Bjornar eventually scored a third goal in the second half.
This match was a poor display all around. The worst part of it was not the missed shots, but our lack of competitive edge and our woeful
work-rate. It was one of those games where nothing seemed to work for us. We had no breaks. Of course, this is still not an excuse
for not running and
helping each other out on the field. This was not pleasant weather in which to play in Bergen, nor was the match a good experience for the
Strommen team. The continued bad weather that night reflected our collective mood.
This has been a hard week with two losses and 8 goals against us. Our next match will be
another hard one, against Klepp away. We need to get
back on track.
