RHIAN'S SOCCER JOURNALS:

LAST MINUTE VICTORY OVER AMAZON GRIMSTAD   4th July 2009

We beat Amazon Grimstad today by one goal to zero. The Amazon team may be way below Team Strommen in the table, but this was a very close game. They played really well at their home ground and pushed us right until the end of the match.

We ended up scoring the winning goal in about the 92nd minute. This was a little too close for comfort. And, I say this as the goal scorer! Marit sent a great long ball diagonally to the goal. It skipped off the top of the centerback’s head and directly into my path. I don’t think I aimed. I just laced the shot and it was hard and in the goal. So much for finesse. We won.

Even though this game ended up going right down to the wire, we were, in my opinion, the better team by far. As usual, we had some great scoring chances throughout the game. And as usual we still need to improve our finishing if we want to get anything out of this season.

Grimstad gave everything they had and worked hard, and by the end of the game they were collapsed all over the field. They really personified what it means to give everything you have.

We can learn from them. We may be the more talented team, but we could easily have tied or even lost today, because the opposition worked their butts off and never gave us an inch. I would vote for their goalkeeper as the player of the game. She made some fantastic saves. As second and third stars I would vote for our two Team Strommen centerbacks, Marita and Anne, who had fine games as well.

Next up, we have a huge game on the 7thJuly against Kolbotn in the Norway Cup championship. I am hoping that all the little lessons we have been taught over the past month will be evident for the game. There is no doubt that we can win this match if we are up for it and willing to put everything on the line. Of course, this is always a much easier thing to say than to do - lip service is easy; actions really count. I am looking forward to the match.
