RHIAN'S SOCCER JOURNALS:

VICTORY AT LAST:  TEAM STROMMEN WINS 3 - 0 19th April 2009

We won our first game yesterday when we beat Klepp 3-0 in the third game of our Topserrien season.. It was one of those games when nothing could go wrong; a time when everything we did seemed to work out and go right. It was the kind of match which is an awful lot of fun to be a part of - if you are the winning team.

Playing at home is always an advantage and we have a great group of core fans in front of whom we love to perform. There may not be many of them, but they are always there, and they always make as much noise as possible. I hope we can make the LSK Hallen, which is the name of our home field, a place which other teams are frightened to visit. Yesterday's match was a good start to doing this.

Our first goal came early, about 10 minutes in, when D got the ball by the right sideline and ran down to the end line. Then she crossed it to Una for the goal. It was a great start for us and did much to establish our confidence.

I scored the second goal when one of our forwards, Ida, was fouled just outside the 18 and just off center. As I stood behind the ball I realized that I could not see their goalkeeper, which in turn meant that she could not see me. I hit the ball well, but I also had a whole lot of net to hit and I was very pleased to see it go into the bottom right hand side of the goal. It is my first goal of the season, and this is always exciting.

We dominated huge stretches of the game, although Klepp they did get a few chances on us. I think more than anything, we are going to have to work on our consistency and focus. I mean this not only in bringing our best game to each match, but consistency during a game. We really can't afford to have lulls, which we did toady, because good teams will take advantage of these.

We scored our last goal of the game really late, I think in the 89th minute, when Ida received the ball near the penalty spot, turned and slotted it home in the bottom left of the net.

There was an interesting guest at the game: our National Team assistant coach Betty. She has recently been in Rome, so she took the opportunity to fly in and monitor our progress. She and the staff want to see how D and I are getting on in the Norwegian league. It was good to see her and the interest of the staff. I enjoyed showing her around my apartment and introducing her to my "world" over here in Strommen. It is a great place to live and I am always very pleased, and proud, to show people around. This was literally a flying visit from Betty, and she departed this morning at 6:00am, poor thing. She must be collecting some air miles at the moment.

The past few days have been pretty tiring with three games in seven days, but I think the team has done remarkably well. Everyone has looked after herself well between matches, and recovered as best they can to being as fully "charged" as possible. Luckily for me, I was able to eat really well during my time off. Even though I still had leftovers from Easter last week, I was able to enjoy even more amazing food as my roommate Maria, who is Greek, celebrated the New Year this weekend. My favorite thing in the world at the moment is the sweetbread she made for the occasion. This is amazing ! Even Betty, an Italian, loved it. I have asked Maria to not tell me what is in it. And, I would appreciate it if everyone else follows her example and keeps the ingredients to themselves, so that no one ruin this for me.

This is about it from me. I train again tomorrow at 7:00am. I am not looking forward to this. Games may be exhausting, but at least they keep the ungodly training hours at bay!!

Thank you for all those who offered opinions on my throw-in and deflection against Roa.
