RHIAN'S SOCCER JOURNALS:
CANADA CRUSHES FERNS DESPITE TORRENTIAL RAINS 18
June 2008
We beat New Zealand this afternoon by 2-0 in the last of our pool games at the
Peace Queen Cup 2008. The game was not anything
special, but we got the job done.

Conditions were not but ideal with the rain pouring down in a monsoon - this hardly does justice in describing the deluge we had
to endure out on the field. I will try to post a video of the rain, because you need to see it to believe it. The bad news is that when we asked
some Suwon natives about this weather, they said that this is now the rainy season, and the torrential downpours should let up some
time next month!!"

Playing in the rain, especially when it is warm, can be quite enjoyable. However, it can also be a challenge and it makes it hard to play
your best soccer. The ball often skids and footing can be treacherous. Anyway, we won the game and qualified for the Peace Queen Cup finals
on 21st. June. This match will probably be against the Americans. We have been playing against our neighbours to the South fairly frequently
over the last few months, and we always have a good game against them ( let's forget about last May's debacle.)

After yesterday's match against New Zealand, we had a quick snack followed by ice baths. We had to hurry things, as our manager Les
had planned a meal out at a local Korean barbeque restaurant. We were all looking forward to this, as we remembered our experience two
years ago at a similar eatery was a great experience. This time, the restaurant was only about 15 minutes away, a good thing as we were all
pretty hungry by this point. The only people not looking forward to the meal out of the hotel, were the unfortunate vegans. Two years ago they
not only had nothing to eat, but had to suffer through the wafting barbequing meat aromas for the entire meal. This time however, things certainly
looked much improved for the vegans, as right from the start, we discovered two place settings with vegetarian name tags on them. This alone
earns Les an A+ for management skills. Once again as well, the food was great. Mostly though, it was just pleasant to eat something different
from hotel fare.

We all enjoyed our meal and everyone was in great humour. I managed to sit right next to the vegans and I had the pleasure of watching their
meal first hand. Unfortunately, Kara turned into a culinary casualty when she managed to get hot pepper in her. D had very little sympathy for her, as
Kara continued to rub her eye with a hand still covered in hot pepper!
After such excitement, everyone is looking forward to an early night and a quieter and drier day tomorrow. We are hoping that we may be given
some free time to ourselves.
