RHIAN'S SOCCER JOURNALS:
DAY ONE IN SUWON, SOUTH KOREA 13th June 2008
In my hotel room in Korea, I managed to sleep in till 8:00 am this morning, which is very exciting
news. I was so tired last night that I barely remember going to bed. I do however, remember drinking
a lot of water, a fact that came up twice during the night. The bathroom in the hotel bedroom has a stair
leading up to it, but this is not something that one thinks about in the middle of the night when trying not
to open one's eyes.
Another slightly embarrassing fact about my bladder retention and my trip to the loo during the night
is the fact that I am fairly certain that I fell asleep again while sitting there. The toilets here, and I am sure
everyone is riveted by all this toilet talk, is one of the Japanese kind. It has a heated seat and makes comforting
noises...My roommate has suggested that I leave my airplane pillow in there tonight, in case I fall asleep there
again.

Breakfast was at 9:00am and everyone looked pretty good after a day-long trip. When I say "pretty good," I am
talking pre-coffee good. To get the full effect, a bunch of us were soon heading off to find the local Starbucks.
And, shock of all shocks, there was one about 15 minutes away. This meant that within 30 minutes we were back at
the hotel and everyone looked happy and perky.

The rest of the morning was spent watching the Euro Tournament. This is one of my favourite times. I am normally an
England fan, but thanks to them not having qualified, I am enjoying the opportunity of supporting the under dogs. Not to
rub it in to any Italians out there, because your team is great, but watching them lose and having Tank here to torment
about the loss on a daily basis is a pretty special event for me.

This morning was relatively one here Suwon. Looking out the window is pretty depressing as you can tell that the
temperature is low and there is also a thick layer of smog over the city. Thankfully, by the time training came around,
1:30pm, the smog had burned off and the day was quickly becoming a hot one.

The training session went well, and we worked on back 6 play, as well as some set pieces. It is the usual sort of pre
match day session. I am not used to playing in the heat these days, thanks to cold, rainy Vancouver and I was shocked
by how much I sweat in heat like this. We are all going to have to be very aware of how much we need to hydrate in order
to be totally fir for the games.

The rest of the day was spent watching the other Euro game, Poland versus Austria, and eating. After practice we had
a snack at 4:00pm, followed by supper at 7:00pm. We are always well fed on these trips. As I am writing this, it is now
9:00 pm. At this time tomorrow night we will be one hour into our game against Argentina. Judging by how tired I am
tonight i think a few cups of caffeinated liquid will be needed tomorrow.
