RHIAN'S SOCCER JOURNALS:

NERVOUS TIMES; THE DAY BEFORE       8th April 2008

I'm not too sure what I should be writing about in this journal. What does someone write about the night before the most important game of her life? At least, this is how I and the team are viewing this match against Mexico tomorrow.

We had an easy day with training in the morning, and then we were given the rest of the day off to recuperate and energize before game time tomorrow. D and I made ourselves another ice bath. There is a feeling that we want to do everything and anything to prepare. We don't want to leave any stone unturned. No one wants to have any excuse for not giving 100% on the field tomorrow.

The baths felt great, but it took us forever to warm up again afterwards. Even a large cup of tea didn't do much for me. D had a meeting with Even soon afterwards and claimed she was curled up in a ball and shivering the entire time. As Even didn't mention it to her, I guess he just expects that type of behavior from her.

The Champions League games were on television which gave us some relaxation outlet. There is a pretty big part of this Canadian team who support Liverpool ... ok maybe just Amy, Sincy and myself, but we are still more in number than the Arsenal supporters, namely Robyn and Maeve (equipment manager). You can imagine how much grief we gave them once the TV game was over. The insanely nice Maeve even swore at me ... but I do admit to having been dancing circles around her and taunting her when the expletive occurred. We also watched the Chelsea game, but no one really cared about the result of that one, Sorry to all you Chelsea fans, but even you would have to admit to today's game being incredibly boring. At least the Champions League soccer games were great for getting our minds off what is coming tomorrow. For a couple of hours we were able to relax totally and think about something other than.... ok well not soccer, but at least not our game against Mexico.

We are expecting the two games tomorrow to be sold out. WE need all the help we can get to stay calm and avoid the nervous creepies. Tonight we had a meeting with all the staff and Les played a video that Soccer Canada has made for us, The message of the video was "We Believe," and it was quite something to watch. Very often when we are playing away from Canada, we forget how much support there is for us back home. The majority of our games these days seem to be played on other continents where we don't see many fans at all for the women's game. We rarely see many fans of our own in the crowd.

As a result, even though we never forget what an honour it is to represent our country, we forget how many young women and fans we actually do have. You almost forget that people do care. We become insulated from the outside world in foreign countries, and we have little news coming in from home. All of this is to say that the video showed us teams from across Canada who had sent in their photos and their message of believing in us. There were quite a few tears in the room once the lights were turned back on. These pictures and messages that have been sent through the website to us have been posted along our hallway. Now, every time we walk down the hall we walk through a tunnel of support from home. No matter how loud the Mexican crowd becomes, all we need to do is to remember that we have all this support. Thank you all so much. We know how lucky we are to be getting this opportunity tomorrow, and we intend to seize it. This Olympics is our dream and the culmination of all that we have been preparing for. We will be playing to win, but we are also playing for those back home who love the game and have been willing to go out of their way to stand behind us through thick and thin.
