RHIAN'S SOCCER JOURNALS:

CALIFORNIA GOLFING STORIES         9th December 2007

WE have been training hard, but we were given a bit of a day off today. This means that the coaching staff put us through a tough morning fitness session, but then after that, we were free till 7:00pm. Everyone on the team had different plans: Some went shopping; some went surfing, and Amy Vermeulen, Diana and I went golfing with D’s brother Stuart who lives in the area.

If you have read some of my previous journals, you will know that Golfing has never been a forte of mine. I am the red faced woman with a club, using it to fan that little ball. However, I felt that perhaps today, the tides would change. Perhaps with all my experience of missed drives, hooks, slices, missed chip shots, sand traps, and shots from the rough, I might finally have a decent game. I did not! I think that the brutal wind blowing across the course might have played a slight part in my poor showing, but it hardly seemed to affect the other three, so I am not sure how much blame I can pin on it.

Stuart, D’s brother, knows the course and killed us all. I actually really enjoyed watching how golf is meant to be played. Even though I believe some of his perfect shots can be attributed to the size of his driver’s head which was as big as a small boulder. However, for the rest of his perfect game I cannot find an excuse. Amy V and I were sharing a golf cart and we spent a lot of our time leaning out from it staring in awe at his straight shots which soared down the fairway. Can you tell I am a little jealous?

D and Amy both had decent games; nothing more than that though. J Both had some good moments and both had some pretty awful ones. Hey, just because I can’t master this golf game doesn’t mean I can’t be a good judge of it. Amy’s best moment came when she putted the width of the green and drained it straight into the pot. The moment might have been even better had we not realized immediately afterwards that she had accidentally hit D’s ball and not her own - So sad!

D’s best moment probably came when she made a good shot and chipped her golf ball onto the green. I don’t know what happened exactly, but I do know that she raised her arms victoriously into the air and yelled “I am queen on the butter!” Amy and I stared at one another for a second, before bursting into hysterical laughter. Thanks to the wind, D’s triumphant moment was ruined; she had apparently been yelling that she had made a good shot and now she was going to ace the hole with her putter. For us though, she will always be "the butter queen."

My own best moment is one of the easier ones to pick out: I hit a car! I was having issues all day with my shots curving to the right; I think it's called a "slice." Anyway, the shot looked pretty good when it came off the club, and then it started to slice, and … oh no, it landed on a car right in the middle of the Club's parking lot! A small group had gathered by the time I skidded to a stop next to the car in my golf cart. I must havbe been a little wild eyed and a little sweaty, but I was relieved to discover that the Scion car is made of very durable materials.

The two guys standing next to the car turned out to be the owners. They took it well and even laughed at my nervous attempt at a joke, when I informed them that that this shot had in fact been my best of the day. Thank goodness that little moment didn’t turn out any worse. Now it can just be a funny story to tell, instead of a giant hole in my bank account.

Well, golf and recreation are over, and it's back to training!
