OTTAWA FURY & W LEAGUE:
FURY TAKE DOWN LYNX
1st July 2006
Open up five point lead in division race.
The Fury defeated the previously unbeaten Toronto Lady Lynx this evening in Ottawa. The Fury answered an opening goal from Deanna Everett with two goals from Leah Robinson and Annie Hamel to secure a 2-1 victory. The win gives the Fury first place in the Northern Division of the W-League with a 7-1-0 record and 21 points. The Lynx drop to 5-1-1 and now trail the Fury by 5 points but have a game in hand. Rhian reports that " we dominated the game though they did get a few dangerous breaks. They have a good young team and played well with one another; we had a few close calls."
Toronto started brightly and had the Fury on the defensive with Deanna Everett and Sylvia Forbes keeping the Fury on their toes. The Lynx took the lead in the 4th minute when Tanya Dennis broke down the left hand side and found Everett who shot comfortably past Leisha Alcia. The Fury were shocked, but responded well and in the 10th minute rounded Lynx keeper Justine Bernier in a play which resulted in Leah Robinson being brought down inside the penalty box. Robinson converted the penalty kick herself to tie the game at one. The goal was the first conceded by the Lynx in regular league play this season.
The Fury then took the game to the Lynx; Robinson had a shot saved by Bernier and Wilkinson headed over the bar before, in the 19th minute, Annie Hamel would beat Bernier to a through ball and shoot the Fury into a lead that would eventually hold up for the rest of the game. Annie's goal was a good "hustle play,." The defender was shielding the ball back to her keeper and Annie chased after it and got her toe in; she poked the ball through the keeper's legs.
In the second half, the Fury continued to create the most clear cut chances. Wilkinson, who was a constant threat to the Lynx, set up a number of chances for Matheson (twice), Parker, and Hamel. Rhian was also unlucky not to score following a dubious offside call.
As the half wore on the Lynx became more adventurous and the Fury survived a few tense goalmouth scrambles in the closing minutes. As in the previous game with Laval, the Fury failed to capitalize on their early chances and almost paid the price in the latter stages. Marie-Eve Nault and Carmelina Moscato held firm at the center of the Fury defence to counter the Lynx for whom Amanda Ciccini, Deanna Everett, Jen Williams and substitute Loredana Riverso were prominent. They really stepped up the pressure at the end of the game, and the Fury was forced to defend frantically.
On Tuesday next, July 4th, the Fury Women play a very special exhibition game against the visiting Everton Ladies from England. Note the special KO time of 6:30 PM. Everton were runners-up in the 2005-6 FA Women’s Premier League in England. The Fury Men will next be at home on Wednesday July 5th (KO 7:00 PM) against the Vermont Voltage. All games are at Keith Harris Stadium at Carleton University.
