OTTAWA FURY & W LEAGUE:

FURY RALLY TO DEFEAT RHINOS

24th June 2006
Four different scorers find goal in Rochester.

The Ottawa Fury rallied from a 2-1 deficit to defeat the improving Rochester Rhinos Women by a score of 4-2 on goals from McConville, Robinson, Stocco and Valerio. Ghanaian international Mavis Danso scored both Rochester goals. The Fury move to 5-0-0 on the season.

The Fury expected a tough match with Rochester as the Rhinos have made some important acquisitions in the past few weeks including the exciting Mavis Danso who has World Cup experience with Ghana. In addition the Fury were without Diana Matheson, Rhian Wilkinson and Robyn Gayle, all on international duty with Canada, plus Amy Vermuelen who is on a trip to Germany with her varsity team.

Both teams created opportunities in the opening minutes but it was the Fury who drew first blood in the 19th minute when Eilish McConville latched onto a through pass from Kelly Parker and rounded the keeper to give the Fury a one goal lead. The advantage would last only three minutes before the lively Danso capitalized on a mistake by the Fury defence to slot the ball past Swiatek. Both sides continued to create chances with both defences looking less than rock solid. Hamel went close for the Fury and Swiatek made a fine save to deny Danso.

The second half started badly for the Fury. Failure to shut down an attacker on the right hand side led to a cross which was fumbled by Swiatek leaving Danso to pick up the pieces and score easily. Anne Hamel, who was the pick of the Ottawa players in this game, brought about the equalizer when she was brought down in the penalty box leaving Leah Robinson to score from the ensuing penalty in the 51st minute.

In the 65th minute, Fury coach Frank Lofranco, made a double substitution bringing on youth players Mallory Outerbridge and Alex Valerio to add some pace to the attack in a game played in very hot conditions on field turf. The move would work as Stacy Stocco put the Fury ahead in the 80th minute with a shot from the edge of the box and debutant Alex Valerio, a Fury U17 SYL player, sealed the game in the 90th minute finishing off a fine move involving Parker and Robinson.

The Fury welcomed back Allison Kelly for her first game of the season and she gave a typically robust first half performance before giving way to another debutant Melissa Miller who gave added height, speed and physicality to the defence in the second half. A good result for the Fury who played with a weakened squad and were able to come from behind to seal the win and maintain their perfect league record.
