OTTAWA FURY & W LEAGUE:

FURY DO ENOUGH TO SHORT CIRCUIT VERMONT VOLTAGE

21stJune 2006
Settle for two goal win over Vermont.

The Ottawa Fury posted their fourth consecutive win and their fourth consecutive shutout as they coasted to a 2-0 victory over the Vermont Lady Voltage at Keith Harris Stadium on a great sunny summer evening for soccer. Vermont who had former US international Kristen Luckenbill in goal played a solid defensive game and never allowed the Fury to run away with the game. Despite their domination of almost every aspect of the game and every game statistic, the Fury were forced to settle for only a 2-0 victory.

The Fury took an early lead in the 10th minute when a superb through ball from Diana Matheson put Annie Hamel into space, and she made no mistake with a fine shot to the left of Luckenbill. Hamel would go close 5 minutes later and in the 24th minute a fine passing sequence involving Matheson, Hamel and Rhian Wilkinson resulted in Rhian hitting the post from close range.

In the 31st minute the Fury went two goals up from an indirect free kick awarded against goalkeeper Luckenbill. From the kick, Leah Robinson laid the ball into the path of Diana Matheson whose shot was deflected by a defender to the onrushing Kelly Parker who scored from close range.

The Fury dominated possession throughout the half, with the Voltage seemingly content to sit back and let their defensive wall soak up the Fury pressure. The Fury found it difficult to turn their domination into goals. Good approach work by Wilkinson, Robinson, Parker, and Stocco all saw near misses, and the Fury outshot Vermont by 27 shots to 4. The Voltage’s four shots on goal came from Erin Pitchiotino (2), Kristin Boujos and Ashley Pfaff.

The result means that the Fury improve their league record to 4-0-0 having scored 17 goals in four games with no reply. Taryn Swiatek received the shutout.

The Fury Women will hit the road this weekend to take on the Rochester Rhinos on Saturday and the Hamilton Avalanche on Sunday. However, the Fury will be without international players Diana Matheson, Rhian Wilkinson and Robyn Gayle who have all been included in Canada’s squad for an international friendly match with Italy in Toronto to be played this Sunday.

The Fury’s next home PDL game is a 6:00 PM kick off against the Cape Cod Crusaders on Saturday June 24th and on Sunday, June 25th the Fury will take on the USL Division 1 Toronto Lynx in exhibition play (Kick off 3:30 pm). Both games are at Keith Harris Stadium on the Carleton University campus.
