OTTAWA FURY & W LEAGUE:
OTTAWA FURY LOSE TO WILDCATS IN EXHIBITION PLAY
22nd May 2006
Ottawa Fury continued their two match road trip with an exhibition game against the 2005 W League Champions, New Jersey Wildcats, on Sunday evening. The exhibition was a rematch of last year's W-League Championship final, and in both games, the Wildcats won by a 3 goal margin. This time, the Fury went down 1 - 4.
New Jersey held the upper hand throughout the game with a 12-5 advantage in shots against the Fury. Ottawa looked dangerous early behind Rhian Wilkinson, who volleyed over the bar in the ninth minute and rolled a shot just past the right post in the 21st minute. However, New Jersey struck first as Kendall Fletcher sent Ferrell up the right side and she drove a low hard ball toward the goal that hit Fury keeper McNulty in the hands and then rolled into the goal.
The second half was all Wildcats with a 7-1 advantage in shots. After she was fouled outside the box on the right, Brazilian star Formiga snapped a strong header into the upper right corner off Beth McNamara's free kick to put the Wildcats up by two in the 59th minute. Just 1:17 later, Formiga was at it again making a brilliant move past a defender on the right before driving a high ball toward the goal that drifted over substitute goalkeeper Leisha Alcia and in off the back post.
Ottawa's lone goal was a fantastic strike from Rhian Wilkinson in the 71st minute. Following a defensive miscue, Wilkinson gained control of the ball and cracked a 25-yard blast into the upper left corner from the right side.
The Wildcats closed out the scoring behind a good strike of their own from Kristi Lefebvre in the 86th minute. Formiga stole the ball and slipped it out right for Lefebvre, who cut into the middle before hooking a 25-yard left-footed shot just inside the left post.
Despite the score, this was a good start for the Fury. Diana Matheson played her first game of the season, as she finishes up her exams at Princeton, while an ailing Rhian Wilkinson also played her first game while suffering from the flu'.
The Fury open their regular season at home in Keith Harris stadium on Sat. 27th May 2006 , when they take on the newly founded Hamilton Avalanche at 6:00 p.m. Then, on 28th May 2006, Ottawa Fury play Northern Ontario's Sudbury Canadians at Keith Harris stadium at 3:30 PM
