OTTAWA FURY & W LEAGUE:

FURY DEEP SIX SUDBURY CANADIANS

28th March 2006

Fresh from their 5-0 victory over the Hamilton Avalanche, the Ottawa Fury scored a 6 - 0 victory over the hapless Sudbury Canadians at Keith Harris stadium on Sunday afternoon. Once more, the crowd was about 200 people, and the weather was hot, humid and sunny.

However, despite the score line, the Fury were once again slow to find their rhythm and get into their game. The Fury's Kelly Parker missed two good chances early on as the Fury began to control the game. In fact, it was 25 minutes before the home team could break through the robust Sudbury defence. But, it was again Parker, who burst through from midfield, then fed Annie Hamel to score easily past Julia Boschetto in the Sudbury goal.

Only four minutes later the second score came. The Fury would go further ahead when Leah Robinson tallied her second penalty kick of the weekend in the 29th minute after Zoe Avner had been brought down. Five minutes later, it was 3-0 when Carrie Kveton put Wilkinson through to score. The score remained 3 - 0 at the half.

It was more of the same in the second period, with the Fury dominating play. The pace of Rhian Wilkinson, in particular, was too hot to handle for the Canadians' defence and they had a torrid time trying to contain her. it was from a Wilkinson corner in the 54th minute that Amy Vermuelen forced the ball home for the Fury’s fourth goal.

Two final goals from Annie Hamel rounded out the scoring for the Fury and gave Hamel three goals on the day. The shot count of 25 to 3 is indicative of the Fury’s domination of the game, but Sudbury did manufacture a couple of chances towards the end of the match. However, sixteen year old Canadian U20 goalkeeper Erin McNulty, who got the start in goal, was up to the task and gained the shutout.

For the Ottawa Fury, this is a 6 point opening weekend. In the Northern Division they advance to 2-0-0 on the season, and a share of first place with Laval Comets and Toronto Lynx.

The Fury will again be at home next weekend when then they entertain the Rochester Rhinos Women on Saturday, June 3rd at Keith Harris Stadium, Carleton University. Kick off is 6:00 PM.
