OTTAWA FURY & W LEAGUE:

FURY DOWN ROCHESTER RHINOS

3rd June 2006
McConville double seals the deal.

It was a brave set of fans who turned out to watch the Fury take on the Rochester Rhinos Women on Saturday night at Keith Harris Stadium. The game was played in a consistently heavy downpour which made playing conditions difficult. The Fury weathered the storm however, and extended their opening season winning streak to three straight games with a 4-0 win.

Honors were even during the first period of play with both Rochester and Ottawa creating a few chances but neither side being dominant. Rhian Wilkinson was always dangerous down the right and she would put the Fury ahead in the 19th minute with a powerful shot after a typically fine through pass from Canadian international Diana Matheson. However, the Rhinos continued to frustrate the Fury keeping the score to one goal at the half.

In the opening minutes of the second half, the Rhinos started to take the game to the Fury and caused the Fury defence and keeper Taryn Swiatek a few anxious moments. However in the 60th minute, a fine flowing move initiated and finished by defender Robyn Gayle ended with Wilkinson crossing from the right hand side of the field for Robyn Gayle to score past Rhinos' keeper Margaret O’Neil.

With a two goal lead the Fury began to play with more confidence and the introduction of striker Eilish McConville into the game in the 70th minute proved to be the catalyst for a period of late domination. In the 71st minute, McConville opened her account after a feed from Kelly Parker. Moments later McConville could have another as she slid a shot narrowly wide. The striker was not to be denied however and in the 90th minutes, she wrapped up the scoring with an unassisted goal.

The Fury record improves to 3-0-0 on the season. Taryn Swiatek gained her second shutout in as many games behind a Fury defence which has yet to concede a goal in regular season play.

The Fury Women will be at home next weekend when then they entertain the New Jersey Wildcats (3-0-0) in exhibition play on Saturday, June 10th at Keith Harris Stadium, Carleton University. Kick off is 6:00 PM. The game is a rematch of the 2005 W-League Championship Final in which the Wildcats defeated Ottawa 3-0. The Fury inflicted the only loss incurred by the Wildcats in two seasons of regular season play in their last visit to Ottawa and will be looking for another victory to avenge their Championship loss. Ottawa native and Canadian international Charmaine Hooper is a member of the Wildcats squad.
