TEAM CANADA:

South Korea Peace Queen Cup

1st November 2006  MATCH DAY VS BRAZIL

This will have to be a short report, as I am absolutely exhausted and we are leaving early in the morning to return to Seoul. We beat Brazil tonight 4-2, and although this was not one of our better games, we won.

I think that both teams were really tired out on the pitch, and this is perhaps not that surprising when we have played three top-level games in six days. The result was sloppy soccer with lots of mistakes. However, because we have been in residential camp, living and breathing soccer for the past few weeks, I really think our superior fitness was the reason we won tonight. All of those runs around the lake in Burnaby must have finally paid off, although I am really hoping Even isn't reading this report. I have no wish to run around that lake ever again.

We got onto the score sheet very early in the game. I think it was probably around the second minute. Martina Franko scored the goal off of a neat chip pass by Sincy. She took the ball well and challenged the keeper and won.

The second goal came from Randee, who has scored against Brazil every time she has played them. This time she tallied off of a corner by Kiss that she powered home perfectly with her head. Unfortunately, the Brazilians scored against us at 13 minutes. Roseil, a midfielder who used the play for Washington pulled one back as she beat Erin McLeod with the outside of her right boot.

Our third goal came when Sincy scored off a pass from me on the wing. She took it off her back foot and flicked in behind her. The ball trickled in the net, but even if it hadn't reached the line, Amy Walsh was there to shield the ball in.

Next, I scored a goal following a great run down the left flank by Mel Booth. She ran the whole length of the field before crossing me a perfect ball along the ground. The pass was too far in for the defender to reach, and too far out for the keeper, resulting in an easy tap in for me. The half-time score was 4 - 1 in our favour.

At the half, Sasha Andrews subbed in for Chapman and Isabelle Morneau for Sophie Schmidt. This allowed us to change our formation to 4-4-2. Andrea Neal subbed in for Amy Walsh, Jar for Sincy, Amy Vermeulen for Franko and Leisha Alcia for McLeod in the last 15 mins to earn her first full international cap.

Nilda closed the gap for Brazil in the 86th minute with a good left-foot shot that flew past Leisha Alcia, but time ran out for Brazil, and the game ended 4 - 2.

Canada coach Even Pellerud said his team could have done better. "I wasn't too happy. We didn't end very well and we didn't do a good job of attacking. We gave the Brazilians too many chances," he said. "We need to let this sink in and evaluate what we have to do for the next game."

Canada advances to Saturday's final after winning all three of its group games to emerge as the clear Group A winner. Canada's final opponent will be decided Thursday with the completion of Group B play

We are all really excited about the Finals coming up, although at the moment, all we can think about is giving our bodies some rest and getting an early...ish night tonight. Rhian
