TEAM CANADA:

CANADA WILL PLAY IN REVISED 2006 PEACE CUP IN SOUTH KOREA

11th October 2006

Canada will have their chance to continue their preparations for the Gold Cup contest this Fall, after being invited to play against some of the best teams in the world for this year’s Peace Queen Cup in South Korea. Canada has replaced Nigeria in the competition, as the African nation is unable to attend.

Now, with international tensions rising after North Korea's atomic weapons test, the DPR Korea team has now withdrawn from the Peace Cup as well. Their place will reportedly be taken by the Netherlands.

The Peace Cup was created as part of a festival of peace in an attempt to bring the world together through soccer. The first two tournaments featured only men’s club teams and were won by PSV Eindhoven in 2003 and Tottenham Hotspur in 2005, respectively. This year's version will feature eight Women’s National Teams. They will play a round-robin format in group play with the two group winners meeting for the title.

This tournament will be the final matches for Canada before it enters the 2006 CONCAF Women’s Gold Cup where the Canadian team will attempt to earn one of the region’s direct berths to the 2007 FIFA Women’s World Cup in China. The tournament features some of the best teams in the world and should provide excellent competition in the run up to the CONCAF Gold Cup. The USA are currently ranked 2nd in the world, Brazil 4th, Denmark 9th, Canada 12th and Australia 15th

Canada are drawn in Group A against Brazil, Italy and host nation and Asian champions, South Korea. In Group B, Olympic champions USA meet the Netherlands, Australia, and the strong European nation Denmark. The eight-nation tournament is the richest in women’s soccer, with $200, 000 available to the winners and $50,000 to the runners-up.

The 2006 Peace Cup will be played in six cities commencing on 28th October 2006, with the winners of the two groups to meet in the final in Seoul on 4th November 2006.     Peace Cup website
